The Grasmere Gingerbread online shop

Father's Day

For this year’s Father’s Day (Sunday 16th June), Grasmere Gingerbread® sought inspiration from West Cumbria’s maritime history, its association with the international spice trade and the rebellious spirit of Cockermouth sailor Fletcher Christian who led the Mutiny on the Bounty

Despite Grasmere’s status as a landlocked locale in the heart of the Lake District, its culinary destiny was shaped by the importation of exotic condiments and other foodstuffs into the county harbours of Whitehaven, Workington and Maryport.

Without these ports’ merchant seafarers’ voyages of adventure to the West Indies, there would have been no aromatic ginger to make Grasmere Gingerbread® and no rich rum or dark sugar to create Cumberland Rum Butter - delicious spicy-sweet treats included in our Father’s Day gift sets.

Certainly, Fletcher Christian - who attended the Cockermouth Free School at about the same time as Grasmere poet William Wordsworth - owed his living to 18th century maritime trade.  As Master’s Mate on the Bounty, he was transporting breadfruit plants from Tahiti to the West Indies when he rebelled against Captain Bligh’s harsh treatment of the crew.

Other famous maritime names from Cumbria include the brothers Wilson and Robert Walker who helped found the Japanese merchant navy, 19th century master mariner William Nelson who became a respected figure in and around Maryport and Sir John Barrow who became Second Secretary to the Admiralty.
