This evocative dusky image is possibly the most famous and reproduced of all William Heaton Cooper’s landscapes of the English Lake District. ‘After Sunset’ began life as a detailed drawing of Grasmere looking towards Helm Crag. Later, the artist captured the dying light of the valley in an outdoor colour study before completing the painting in his studio.
