Together in harmony: Joanne Hunter of Grasmere Gingerbread® and Gareth McKeever of Pure Lakes

The new Grasmere Gingerbread® Citrus & Ginger Multi-Surface Cleaner is the latest collaboration with fellow Lake District company Pure Lakes.

“It’s not just another ubiquitous cleaning product on a supermarket shelf but a symbol of loving co-operation and care and attention to the natural world,” declared Joanne Hunter, co-owner of Grasmere Gingerbread®.

Her challenge to Pure Lakes to create an effective multi-surface spray that is also gentle to sensitive skin and kind to the environment was very testing,” admitted Gareth McKeever, co-owner of the Far Sawrey based skincare business.

“As we do not use harsh chemicals in any of our products, we had to devise a formulation that was grounded in naturally derived ingredients but powerful enough to do its job as a cleaner,” he explained.

After numerous experiments with different combinations of ingredients - and lots of old-fashioned elbow grease - Gareth is delighted with the new product.

“Not only is it effective on the toughest of surfaces but it pays homage to the iconic aromatic provenance of Grasmere Gingerbread® because one of its ingredients is ginger root oil,” he said.

It is 15 years since Grasmere Gingerbread® first engaged Pure Lakes to produce a ginger and orange hand cream.

It now produces ginger-scented lip balm, hand & body wash, body lotion and hand sanitiser for Grasmere Gingerbread®. They are sold in their Grasmere and Hawkshead shops and via their popular online shop.

“Everyone at Pure Lakes loves working with Grasmere Gingerbread® because - like us - they are a family business with strong roots in the local community and share core values around integrity, authenticity and passion,” added Gareth.

The Citrus & Ginger Multi-Surface Cleaner is sold under the Sarah Nelson brand which pays homage to the Victorian inventor of Grasmere Gingerbread® in 1854.

“I have wistfully wondered what Sarah would have made of this sensitive 21st century cleaner as the main products in her 19th century world were carbolic soap and washing soda that are so rough on human skin,” added Joanne.

Dozens more ginger-flavoured and ginger-themed foodstuffs and gifts are sold under the Sarah Nelson brand.
