I work for a hotel group in the Lake District and we use Grasmere Gingerbread in the rooms of one of our hotels (twice hotel of the the year 2005 & 2006 - Cumbria) instead of standard biscuits as the quality, taste and local heritage are all of the excellence we wish to portray throughout the hotel. The product and service has always been great but recently I met with Andrew on another potential use of his Gingerbread within the same hotel and his professionalism and dedication to to helping in us achieve what we were looking for was exceptional. Grasmere Gingerbread is not just more than a biscuit, Andrew and his wife Joanne are more than just bakers!

We just returned from a wedding in Grasmere where each guest received some Grasmere Gingerbread - I couldn't talk about anything else the next day it tastes so good. I went to the shop and bought a job lot. Some of which I'm just enjoying with a nice cup of earl grey so much I went on line to look them up. So I now discover they have an on-line shop too: fantastic! What a great example of a traditional English specialist business that's maintained a long tradition of great quality products and service. Rare to find these days, but all the more pleasure when you do I guess! Thanks

As he tackles every new venture he undertakes Andrew went into this already thriving family business with his whole heart, determined to make a contribution of his own. His integrity, commitment and determination ensured that despite his previously untested culinary skills the "kitchen" side of the business would become quite literally a "piece of cake"; but what makes his business such an all round overwhelming and now runaway success is the extra you get from Andrew as a person. He provides a first class product, baked by his own fair hands; he serves it with a smile, and he ALWAYS has time for his customers...from the exchange of simple pleasantries face to face to the sharing of life's problems. He will go out of his way, out on any limb, and stretch himself above and beyond any expectation of him to meet any and every request that his made of him, always adding his own unique personal touch. The first time we tasted his gingerbread my children rushed out onto the street positively cooing over it and together with his daughter danced around munching and shouting to passer's by "Get your delicious ginger-bread here"...it was such a spontaneous heartfelt accolade from children who are notoriously brutal critics, it should have been filmed for TV!! Those who know my less than slender frame could be forgiven for thinking I am "bursting" due to overindulgence in his deliciously scrumptious gingerbread....but the reality is I am bursting with pride over the success of the man himself, my brother....Andrew Hunter!!

I absolutely LOVE this gingerbread!! The little shop, the smell of gingerbread and the sounds of busy workers in the back shop really add to the whole experience of Sarah Nelson's Grasmere Gingerbread!

Last year,my beloved husband was diagnosed with cancer. The chemotherapy made him very ill and I wanted to get him some top quality gingerbread, in the hope that this would help with the sickness.A friend advised me to contact Grasmere Gingerbread which I did immediately on line. A beautifully packaged parcel of gingerbread was rapidly dispatched and rapidly eaten and enjoyed by my husband (and a little bit was left for me too!)I was SO thrilled that I emailed Andrew and Joanne to thank them for the wonderful service and tell them why the gingerbread was so much appreciated. Busy though they were, they responded with immense kindness and compassion, sending me such a wonderful email that I just sat and read it with tears pouring down my face! Since then, we've been over to Grasmere and met Andrew, who took the time to speak at length with us and have hugs all round!Talk about depending on the kindness of strangers! We have bought lots more gingerbread and feel we have made friends for life! We cannot praise or recommend the business, and, more importantly, the people, more highly. We shall always remember their wonderful kindness to us. Thank you both. Sioban and Gordon

Everytime I go to Grasmere I always bring some gingerbread back with me, eventhough it's obtainable on line now, it's not quite the same as actually visiting the shop in the gorgeous village.

I first visited this shop some 25 years ago and have been hooked on this unique foodstuff since then, a cross between a biscuit and a cake you can't beat it. I have over the years been forced to ask friends and neighbours to bring some back for me when visiting the area (as I live in the South), and was extremely pleased when the website shop allowed ordering and posting at the touch of a key. I have encourage people to try it, and once they have they want to know how to get more. A truly exceptional recipe with the same personal service which makes you feel like the best customer they have.

It is a rare and special moment to find something that is unique, lovingly crafted and exquisite too. Grasmere Gingerbread manages all of that and makes any trip to the village something special and memorable. And now they mail order for when I can't get to the shop! Perfect.

We discovered this most wonderful place a few years ago whilst on a break in the Lake District. It certainly was true what they say - you can smell it before you see it! When my husband and I got engaged a few years later we knew straight away that we wanted to give our guests the gingerbread as wedding favours. Joanne and the team were the most helpful and flexible people I've ever had the pleasure in dealing with. They supplied the gingerbread in the way that we wanted and all within budget too. We even took the remainder on honeymoon with us! We had so many comments about it after the wedding and even now one year on people still mention to us how lovely it was. Grasmere Gingerbread - we salute you! x

The Grasmere Gingerbread shop is a very special place, believe me I know - I worked there! The traditional shop where you take a step back in time, the (secret recipe) delicious gingerbread and an international mail order service all make this a truly unique business. Andrew and Joanne are doing a wonderful job preserving a piece of Cumbrian history. I love the gingerbread warm and with my morning coffee - a great way to start the day. Whilst working at the shop I also met the delicious Jamie Oliver and Phil Vickery who are both big fans of the gingerbread!! Good luck Joanne and Andrew and everyone at the shop you really do deserve this award - miss you all. Jacqui, Burton in Kendal.

What a delicacy! From the first time I discovered this place as a visitor from the States, it was love at fist bite. I never fail to make a pilgrimage whenever I'm in the area, and happily resort to having it shipped when I can't--both for myself and for gifts as well. Long live Sarah Nelson! CN, Kalamazoo, MI USA

I have grown up eating Grasmere Gingerbread. I have fond memories of walking home from school through the Church Yard and nipping into the shop to buy my daily slice. I also have fond memories of working in the shop over the years. It is nice to think i have been part of such a fantastic local business that is going from strength to strength. For those of you who saw northwest tonight this evening, It was me who served Tom Cruise!!!! Good luck Andrew, the one and only Gingerbread Man! x

Hi I'm Bob an old friend. It was my daughter Michelle that sold the famous gingerbread to Tom Cruise and Nicole. We had a small Hotel in Grasmere and have been eating the stuff for 20 years. It's standard has never dropped in all that time, even though demand has exploded. I bring people from all over the world to the shop vis my Mountain Goat tours and without exception they would all enter 555 above. Good luck

Who would have thought that such a tiny little shop would be one of the best kept secrets in the Lake District. I am torn between giving it the recognition it deserves with my vote thus allowing countless others to experience what I have since my early childhood, and just keeping it to myself so I don't have to queue behind dozens of Japanese and American tourists. Forget mint cake, this is the indulgence I crave after a long days walk around the area. Andrew Hunter should be the next 'Mr Kipling'!

I grew up in the Lake District and a trip to the Grasmere Gingerbread shop was always a special treat for me as a child. I now live in Asia and thanks to the mail order service, I can still enjoy my gingerbread with the amazing smell bringing back many happy childhood memories. After sampling many foods around the world, I must admit there is nothing to match it. Jill, Singapore

It's so refreshing to see in a world of change and 'progress', a product still being made in the same way, on the same premises and to the same recipe. With the shop having a worldwide mail order service this delicacy can be enjoyed by those who can't get to the shop - although nothing beats seeing where the gingerbread is actually created!

There's nothing to match the real Grasmere Gingerbread anywhere in the world. Good job they mail to New Zealand to keep us satisfied and it makes a brilliant choice for presents for people back home in the UK. Well done to Andrew and Joanne for keeping the Sarah Nelson secret alive! Jules in New Zealand.

This is a fantastic little shop with a lovely sales staff. The store specializes in the most incredible ginger bread I've ever tasted. Having first sampled and purchased it in June '06 I've since placed 2 additional orders for increasingly larger quantities. I've offered samples to friends who are also addicted and begging for more. I'm unable to keep any in the house for us. It's delicious!! Thank heavens it's available online. Thank you, Grasmere Ginger Bread! I'll be a customer for life.

Unfortunately I have only been to the shop once but after you have tasted this gingerbread (especially if it is warmed in the oven) you will accept no imitations. That is why it is so fantastic that you can buy online! This is the one and only gingerbread worth eating and it's just a click of a mouse away.

Some things are just absolutely unique. A visit to Grasmere is just not complete without a visit to Sarah Nelson's shop. There is something authentic about the special blend of biscuit, spice and ginger which is quintessentially Lakeland. Much more than highly recommended - an essential part of the trip!

We found this tiny gem a little while ago and what a find. I couldn't say I like gingerbread (before I tried it) but their's is something different! It's not just the gingerbread which is divine, the whole atmosphere of the shop is quite something: a real bygone from a time when quality actually meant something. Dave Ward (a local photographer)

I am in Heaven - I've found that my childhood memory can be rekindled now, twenty years on! We had Grasmere Gingerbread then and now I can still purchase it, superbly packaged and posted to me in the Pyrenees - different mountains, same gingerbread! I read a poem which mentioned gingerbread, had a blast from the past memory, looked it up on Google and there was the on-line shop - wow! Jacqueline

The warm ginger aroma swirls around the shop which is so tiny. It is in a time and place all of its own with the staff dressed in period costume. This is all before you have bitten into the moist, spicy and warm bread - mmmmm, glorious.

Having worked in Grasmere manu years ago, I still get my 'fix' of gingerbread online. Andrew worked to get the gingerbread for my wedding in Kent (I insisted that everyone had Sarah Nelsons gingerbread with their coffee after dinner). The wonderful gingerbread has made its way onto my dinner party table on many occassion and in many different guises (great crumbled with ice cream or layered with marscapone cheese and coulis!). My poor parents are made to call in every time they are in the District to ensure that they send it down! All in all a truly wonderful and very personal service - and well worthy winner of the local food hero.

Grasmere is one of my favourite places in England and the little gingerbread shop makes it all the more idilyic. The aroma from the shop fills the air within a 30 yard rasius, follow your nose and you'll find a tiny shop, with a couple of staff in period dress who work so hard selling the delicious gingerbread that is like no other, it is truely in a class of it's own.
