Jamie Oliver

The ‘Naked Chef’ sprang to fame in the late 90s after a debut TV appearance in a documentary about the River Café where he worked. Several TV series and books later, Jamie Oliver MBE is now a national treasure.

Joanne met Jamie four years ago when he brought an intake of students for his pioneering TV programme ‘Fifteen’ to Cumbria. “They visited our shop in Grasmere and we gave them a behind-the-scenes tour, showed them how to make rum butter and talked about the shop’s history and the general food history of Cumbria,” says Joanne. “Later, they cooked us a superb barbecue by way of thanks and it was wonderful and uplifting to see their enthusiasm at close hand.”

Jamie’s Fifteen charity restaurant in London encourages disadvantaged young people to follow in his footsteps and Joanne says she was honoured to have been personally involved in such a ground-breaking venture. Click here to see the letter of thanks from all the students...

Jamie later visited the Grasmere Gingerbread Shop’s stand at the County Show in Kendal and then recommended serving the gingerbread with coffee in an article in Delicious Magazine about his family’s Christmas celebrations.

“Grasmere Gingerbread is the best gingerbread I have eaten in my life. It is made from a secret recipe which is 150 years old, and of course, they won’t let me in on it!”
