Traditionally, Wedding Favours symbolise health, happiness and fertility – amorous qualities attributed to gingerbread down the centuries. Grasmere Gingerbread Wedding Favours are doubly potent!

Medieval knights presented shield-shaped pieces of gingerbread as love gifts to their ladies during jousting contests and tournaments. Embossed with cloves to resemble studs and painted with egg white to represent a polished shield, these love gifts became treasured possessions. Eager maidens went even further, decorating gingerbread with real gold in the hope and belief that it would help them to win the love of a handsome knight. It is not hard to understand why gingerbread won its reputation as an aphrodisiac. A warm and pungent spice, ginger warms the blood, excites the senses and induces passion!

During the 18th century it was sold in the streets alongside oysters and at some fairs in the north of England gingerbread men were called husbands. Its aphrodisiacal qualities are celebrated in The Arabian Nights and in Shakespeare’s romantic comedy, Love’s Labour’s Lost, Costard declares: “And had I but one penny in the world, thou shouldst have it to buy gingerbread.”

Our Wedding Favours, which are delicately packaged in either tins or boxes, are made exclusively at Sarah Nelson’s Gingerbread Shop in Grasmere, in the heart of the Lake District.
